Hannie and Do-Yun chose to get married quietly, without a big crowd or elaborate plans. Just the two of them, their closest family, and the city they were in at that moment. Their winter elopement took place in downtown Chicago, starting with a civil ceremony at City Hall and continuing with portraits inside the Chicago Cultural Center.
As a Chicago wedding photographer, I often see couples choosing winter not despite the season, but because of it.

A City Hall Ceremony in Downtown Chicago
The day began at Chicago City Hall, where Hannie and Do-Yun had their civil ceremony. City Hall is a popular choice for elopements in Chicago — it’s simple, meaningful, and keeps the focus where it belongs.

After the ceremony, we took family photos inside the building. The atmosphere was calm and unhurried, which felt especially right for a winter weekday. No rush, no distractions — just a few quiet moments to document something important.
Because December in Chicago can be unpredictable, planning most of the photography indoors made the day feel relaxed and practical, without sacrificing the look or the experience.
Portraits at the Chicago Cultural Center
After City Hall, we headed to the Chicago Cultural Center for portraits.

The Cultural Center is one of my favorite locations for winter elopements in Chicago. The light-filled interiors, high ceilings, and architectural details create a timeless backdrop — especially when it’s cold outside. It’s warm, spacious, and visually interesting without feeling overwhelming.
We focused on natural moments rather than posed shots. Simple movement, quiet interaction, and letting the space do its job. The contrast between winter outside and the calm, soft light inside added to the overall mood of the day.
We stepped outside only briefly for a few outdoor frames — just enough to include the city and the season without fighting the cold.
Why Winter Works for a Chicago Elopement
Winter elopements in Chicago have a very different feel compared to warmer months:
- fewer people and less visual noise
- more focus on architecture and light
- a slower, more intentional pace
- indoor locations that feel elegant and quiet
For couples who value intimacy and simplicity, winter can actually be the perfect time to elope.

Planning an Indoor Elopement in Chicago
If you’re considering a winter elopement in Chicago, planning your timeline around indoor locations can make a huge difference. City Hall, cultural landmarks, and architectural spaces allow you to stay comfortable while still getting a strong visual story.
Short outdoor sessions can always be added when the weather allows — but they don’t have to be the center of the day.

Hannie and Do-Yun’s elopement is a good example of how simple plans can still feel meaningful and complete. A short ceremony, time with family, and portraits in a space that reflects the city.
If you’re planning an intimate elopement or civil ceremony in Chicago — especially in winter — I’d love to help document it in a natural, honest way, without forcing moments that don’t feel like you.
