Couple exiting Chicago City Hall while guests throw flower petals and celebrate their courthouse wedding.

If you’re planning your Chicago City Hall wedding, first of all — huge congratulations! City Hall ceremonies are simple, intimate, and honestly some of my favorite moments to photograph. With just a little preparation, your City Hall wedding photos can look even more timeless and effortless. Here are a few friendly tips from a Chicago elopement photographer who practically knows the Loop by heart.

Bring a second pair of comfortable shoes

You’ll probably want photos not only inside City Hall but also around downtown — maybe by the river, the iconic bridges, or those classic Chicago streets. A comfy pair of shoes makes moving between locations so much easier. Think of it as the secret combo: stylish shoes for the photos, and comfy ones for the walking.

Pick up a small bouquet (a grocery store one works perfectly!)

You don’t need a fancy floral arrangement for your courthouse wedding photos. A simple bouquet from a grocery store adds instant charm and looks beautiful on camera. Plus, it gives your hands something natural to do, which makes posing feel relaxed instead of awkward.

Pack a lip balm and hand cream

Chicago weather can be… dramatic. If we’re doing close-up shots of your rings, hands, or portraits, having soft, moisturized skin makes a surprisingly big difference. A quick touch of lip balm and hand cream before the shoot keeps you looking fresh and glowing.

Bring the little details that matter to you

A cute ring box, vow card, a small bottle of water, or anything meaningful — it all adds a personal touch to your Chicago City Hall elopement photos. These tiny items often become some of the sweetest detail shots from the day.

Most importantly — enjoy the moment

Your City Hall ceremony is supposed to feel relaxed and intimate. You don’t need to worry about posing or what to do next — I’ll guide you through everything and help you feel comfortable every step of the way. The best photos always come from genuine moments and real emotions.
